Minister Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This broader security situation underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in every areas of official operations, from transport use to discussions practices.
